Build Quality

The Sony a6000 uses a rugged polycarbonate body that is quite sturdy and is capable of withstanding the occasional fumble and jostling. Avoid dusty or wet conditions however as the a6000 does not have a weather sealing of higher end cameras. The design is compact even when compared to the smallest DSLR.

Image Quality

When it comes to image quality, the a6000 does not disappoint. It’s 24.3 MP sensor allows you to capture rich details in your scenes. You can print up to 13″x20″ at 300 pixels per inch with absolutely no loss in quality. The quality is good up to 30″x40″. Overall, the a6000 is an excellent balance of megapixel count and sensor size.

Hybrid Autofocus

The Sony a6000 features a hybrid system that combines 25 contrast-detect points and 179 phase-detect points. This combination is the backbone of accurate and fast autofocus in Sony’s mirrorless cameras. According to Sony, the a6000 can acquire focus in 0.06 seconds and has the ability to track a subject while shooting at 11 fps. This makes achieving crystal clear imaging with fast action photography more feasible.

Video Capabilities

Apart from still photography, the a6000 is capable of shooting full 1080p video at 60p or 60i frame rates. Composing videos with proper exposure values is possible with this camera thanks to its Zebra patterning system. You can set the Zebra pattern to a threshold of 70% or 100%.

Wi-Fi Connectivity and Downloadable Apps

The Sony a6000 features Wi-Fi connectivity as well as the NEX-6 tradition of downloadable apps. You can download the apps through Sony PlayMemories and use them to add wide range of artistic filter effects and picture effects processors. Some apps are free to download but you will have to pay for most of them.

Verdict – Who is the Sony a6000 for?

With a simple layout and a very reasonable price, the a6000 is great for beginners and individuals who are looking to buy their first mirrorless camera. The a6000 can do most things well and thanks to its features, it can outperform just about every entry-level DSLR, particularly when it comes to autofocus and shooting speed. Although the camera doesn’t have built-in image stabilization, many DSLR owners might still want to choose a6000 for a lightweight, small go-anywhere handheld use.
