Top 5 Things to Know Before Buying a DJI Drone for Photography

Drones are widely used in the field of photography. DJI is the world’s leading manufacturer of such drones. Their drones can help capture breathtaking aerial shots and are a preferred choice for both amateur and professional photographers. Since there is a wide range of DJI drones available on the market, buying the one for photography isn’t a piece of cake. There are several aspects that you need to consider and things that you need to know before you go into the market to buy one.

The following are some things you should consider before buying a DJI drone for photography:

1. Skill Level

This is one of the most important factors to consider before buying a DJI drone. If you purchase a drone that is beyond your skill level, you will probably end up crashing it, hence wasting your time and money. That’s why it is recommended that you first hone your skill on a relatively cheaper model, then slowly work your way up. There are some models of DJI drones that come with SAFE technology that help stabilize the drone. You should consider buying those if you are new to drone photography.

2. Image Quality

The sensor in a drone affects the image quality. It is similar to regular DSLRs. The size of the sensor matters a lot. Quality aerial photography drones have a larger sensor. The key benefit of the larger sensor is that it allows you to shoot better quality footage even in low light conditions.

3. Flight Time

Don’t expect flight times above 20 minutes, unless you are willing to pay for an industry-level drone. Obviously, a longer flight time allows you to take relatively more photos. But it is recommended that you learn to maximize your flight time. You should always plot your route before takeoff. Packing extra batteries can also help. However, if you want an indoor DJI drone for interior photography, then this is less of an issue.

4. Support for RAW Format

Many photographers use Lightroom or Photoshop for their post-production work. So, the best drone for photography must support RAW or DGN formats. This is because when capturing photos in RAW format, the sensor stores more image data, hence giving you more options when you are back at your computer. This is really particularly useful if you shoot at night. Keep in mind that RAW files are quite large as compared to compressed file formats like JPEG or PNG. So, you will need relatively more space to hold all of those files.

5. Hovering Capabilities

If you want crisp, precise images, then consider buying a drone that can hover in a stable way. This is because if the drone does not hover, it tends to rise or drift which results in blurry pictures. Only a good flight control system can help achieve a stable hover, so buy the drone that has it. It is also recommended that you choose a drone with a controllable gimbal. Look for intelligent functions as well. Also, look for drones that can minimize distortion, shoot vertically, respond to gestures, etc.

Any of the above-mentioned aspects are pretty much a ‘must’ when you are choosing a drone for photography.
